Meh. Suffers from two things: 1) oh, look, someone's writing genre fic but doesn't want to acknowledge it and is therefore treated like she's doing something entirely! new! and unheard! of! and mind! blowing!...except for how it's not (see also: [b:The Time Traveler's Wife|14050|The Time Traveler's Wife|Audrey Niffenegger|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31DB3K45TXL._SL75_.jpg|2153746]) and 2) being a really, really, really obvious working-through of the author's own issues, in ways that actually read as totally creepy and rapey in and of themselves.
Two things that keep it from being a total write-off: 1) the description of Susie's family immediately after her disappearance actually worked for me and 2) Sebold describes abovewater penguins as "amiable hams." That's awesome
